The Problem with Silicone in Children’s Haircare (and What We Use Instead)

The Problem with Silicone in Children’s Haircare (and What We Use Instead) - Bloom Squad® Kids Haircare

When it comes to managing tangles, tears, and those daily brushing battles, what’s in your child’s haircare really matters.

Many conventional shampoos and conditioners rely on ingredients designed to make hair feel instantly soft and smooth. But that “silky” finish doesn’t always tell the full story, especially for children’s delicate, growing hair. So... what are  silicones?

Silicones are synthetic ingredients commonly used in haircare to create slip, and an instantly moisturised feel. They’re added because they coat the hair, reduce friction in the short term.

You’ll often see them listed on ingredients labels as:

  • Dimethicone
  • Amodimethicone
  • Cyclopentasiloxane
  • Cyclomethicone
  • Phenyl Trimethicone
  • Dimethiconol
  • Trimethylsilylamodimethicone

The real problem with silicone

Silicones don’t actually improve the condition of the hair. Instead, they sit on the surface and form a coating. Over time, this often leads to:

1. Build-up that blocks moisture
That coating makes it harder for hydrating and nourishing ingredients to reach the hair shaft. For kids’ hair, which needs consistent hydration, this can contribute to dryness.

2. Hair that feels temporarily smooth… but isn’t
Because silicones sit on top of the hair, they can mask what’s really going on underneath. Hair may feel soft initially, but still be dry or lacking strength – leading to increased hair breakage, damage and split ends.

3. The wash cycle problem
This is where many families notice things getting harder, not easier.

Most silicones aren’t easily removed with gentle cleansers. They often require stronger detergents to wash them out properly. Those detergents can strip away natural oils, leaving hair feeling dry.

The result:

  • Hair becomes drier
  • Tangles tighten
  • Brushing becomes more difficult
  • More product is needed to manage it

You’re basically in a vicious, ongoing cycle of coating, then stripping, coating, then stripping - constantly creating the problems you're trying to solve.

Another watch-out – Mineral Oils

In cheaper, mass-market haircare, you’ll often find mineral oil alongside silicones, or used as a replacement. Mineral oil is derived from petroleum, placing it in the broader category of petrochemicals. Like silicones, it works by coating the hair rather than nourishing it.

This can:

  • Sit on the surface of the hair
  • Contribute to build-up over time
  • Make it harder for moisture to penetrate

You’ll often see these listed on ingredients labels as:

  • Mineral Oil
  • Paraffinum Liquidum
  • Liquid Paraffin
  • Paraffin
  • Petrolatum

Choosing products without these ingredients means you’re more likely getting formulas that support hydration and manageability, rather than just creating the appearance of it.

Why this matters for kids’ hair

Children’s hair is often finer and more prone to tangling. When hair becomes dry or coated, tangles can become tighter and more stubborn.

That’s when brushing turns into a daily struggle.

Healthy, hydrated hair moves more easily, knots less, and is far more manageable.

What we use instead (and why)

Rather than coating the hair, we focus on ingredients in our silicone-free kids Shampoo and Conditioner that support its natural condition:

  • Plant-based oils and butters to soften and smooth
  • Aloe Vera to help maintain hydration
  • Wheat Protein to support strength and manageability
  • Gentle, coconut-derived cleansers that clean without stripping

The goal is simple: hair that’s genuinely soft, easy to brush, and manageable, without relying on heavy coatings.

The takeaway

Silicones and mineral oils are often used to create quick-fix, band-aid results, but they don’t address what hair actually needs to stay healthy and manageable.

When hair is properly nourished and hydrated, it behaves differently. It’s softer, easier to detangle, and far less prone to those daily battles that so many parents know all too well.
